Breast Reconstruction Q & A

What is breast reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure designed to rebuild a breast that has been removed during cancer treatment or lost due to trauma. Today's breast reconstruction techniques enable nearly any woman to have a breast reconstructed, providing natural-looking results that help women feel more confident about the way they look.

How is breast reconstruction surgery performed?

There are several techniques used for breast reconstruction, and to a large extent, the approach used will depend on the anatomy of the patient and the results of the mastectomy, including the amount of natural tissue remaining in the breast. Before any surgery, a comprehensive examination will be performed to determine the optimal site for the incision, as well as the type of implant and how it will be positioned in the breast. Breast reconstruction surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis.

Can mastectomy and reconstruction procedures be performed at the same time?

Some women can have reconstruction performed at the same time as the mastectomy procedure, combining both procedures into a single surgical session. But often, a woman will choose to wait to have reconstructive surgery once her mastectomy has healed to ensure the results are as natural-looking and balanced as possible. Other women may be advised to wait until cancer treatment is complete before having reconstruction performed.

Who is a good candidate for breast reconstruction surgery?

Most women who have lost breast tissue due to cancer or trauma can undergo reconstructive breast surgery to rebuild their breast successfully and restore confidence. However, it is important for women to understand the results can be variable based on the extent of their mastectomy and the amount of remaining breast tissue, as well as other factors. Women should also be aware that the rebuilt breast probably will not have the same sensations as a natural breast, and the incision lines may be more noticeable. During the consultation appointment, these and other issues will be discussed to make sure patient have a clear understanding of what to expect following surgery.
