Breast Augmentation Q & A
What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure designed to increase the size of the breasts by one or more cup sizes through the use of breast implants. Breast implant procedures can be an ideal option for women who feel self-conscious about the size of their breasts, for women in whom one breast is noticeably smaller than the other, and for those who have experienced a reduction in breast volume following childbirth, nursing or weight loss. It can also help restore volume in women whose breasts have decreased in size as a result of aging.
How is breast augmentation performed?
Today, there are several techniques for breast augmentation surgery, and the type of technique used in each case will depend on the anatomy of the patient, the type and size of the implant, and other factors. Incisions can be made under the arm, in the crease below the breast or around the colored portion of the nipple called the areola to help ensure the surgical scar will be as inconspicuous as possible. Once the incision is made, a “pocket” will be created in the breast tissue, either behind the chest wall muscle or in front of it. Next, the implant will be guided into the pocket through the incision and centered underneath the nipples. Saline implants are usually inserted empty and filled once in place; silicone implants are already filled with gel prior to placement. Once the implants are in place, the breasts are evaluated for balance and visual appearance and the incisions are closed and bandaged. Most surgeries take one to two hours to complete.
What is recovery like?
Breast augmentation is performed on an outpatient basis. After a few hours in recovery for observation, patients are discharged home. Most patients can resume most activities within a day or two of surgery, returning to work within one or two weeks. Strenuous activities will be limited for a few weeks while the area heals. Complete detailed instructions will be provided before discharge from the surgical center.
