Nose Job (Rhinoplasty) Q & A
What kinds of issues can a nose job correct?
Rhinoplasty uses a variety of techniques to correct many issues. Such as issues affecting the shape of the nose; including procedures to reduce the size of a nose that appears too large, to smooth out bumps, to lessen the size of nostrils that seem too large, to help a wide nose appear narrower, and to correct deformities in the tip of the nose. The goal of a nose job is to create a nose that is displayed more uniform and more in keeping with the proportions of the rest of the facial structures.
What happens during a rhinoplasty procedure?
Rhinoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis using either general anesthesia or IV sedation. Before the surgery, the nose and other facial structures will be carefully evaluated to determine the type of procedure that's needed to achieve the best possible results. The incision site used during a rhinoplasty procedure will depend on the type of procedure being performed. Some procedures can be performed using incisions inside the nose while others will use external incisions carefully placed to hide the resulting scar lines. Again depending on the procedure, excess bone, cartilage or skin tissue may be removed, or the existing tissue may be repositioned, reshaped or augmented to achieve the desired result. Once the surgery is complete, the skin will be carefully redraped over the nose, and the incisions will be closed. A bandage will be placed over the nose, and a splint may also be used to support the nose and help it retain its new shape during healing.
What is the recovery period like?
Swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes are common following rhinoplasty, and usually, resolve within about two weeks. Pain medication and cold compresses can help reduce these issues, and keeping the head elevated when lying down or sleeping is also important to improve fluid drainage and keep swelling to a minimum. If a splint has been used, it will be removed about a week after surgery.
